After a whirlwind of a year we call 2020, a vacation is long overdue. As most restrictions have been lifted across the country and as other countries are opening back up, we can slowly start feeding our thirst for travel again. With the aftermath of the pandemic still lingering, the last thing you want to worry about while you’re on vacation is your home’s safety. We compiled a list of 10 safety tips before leaving on vacation so that you have peace-of-mind that your belongings are safe.
1. Keep up your landscaping
An untidy lawn can be a magnet to intruders. Tall grass, unkempt bushes or lingering branches make it seem like no one’s home.
2. Stop your mail and packages
Don’t let packages pile up on your doorstep. You can put a stop to your mail and hold it safely at the post office until your return. Visit the United States Postal Service for more information. Want to track your deliveries remotely? Install a front video doorbell that allows you to get notifications whenever the mail person rings your doorbell and leaves your package on your front porch.
3. Don’t share your travel plans online
It’s tempting to post about your next travel plans online for all your family and friends to see. However, this brings unwanted attention from online trolls that could be a security risk for you and your family.
4. Use automated lighting to mimic as if you were home
There’s nothing that screams no one’s home like a dark and unlit home. Automated outdoor lighting, triggered by your Trinity image sensors or smart security cameras, ensures that intruders have nowhere to hide after dark. Set up a smart lighting schedule so that your lights turn on every evening, giving passers-by the impression that you’re home.
5. Create thermostat schedules to save energy when you’re away
Who doesn’t love to save money? You can save as much as 10% on your energy bill by simply turning your thermostat back 7-10 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 hours a day from your usual setting. With our Smart Thermostat, you have full control right at your fingertips through our mobile app.
6. Have a house sitter or neighbor check on your home frequently
Having a secondary emergency contact is an extra level of home protection. In the event of an emergency, a trusted neighbor, friend or family member can stop by your home after a storm, to pick up your mail or just to check in.
7. Use outdoor cameras to monitor any strange occurrences
Did you know that July is Vehicle Theft Protection Month? If you’re leaving your car behind while you’re on vacation or want to keep an eye on the extra car in your driveway or garage, an outdoor camera can be a perfect solution to keep track of your valuable assets.
8. Take your pet with you or leave with someone you trust
Don’t leave your furry, feathery or scaly friends behind while you’re out on vacation. Take them with you, hire a pet sitter, or drop off at a trusted family or friend’s home so that you know Mr. Snuggles is in good hands.
9. Lock up before you go
Allocate time to check that all windows and doors are locked before you head out to your destination. This gives you the confidence and peace-of-mind knowing you checked and don’t have to doubt yourself later.
10. Unplug and turn off any home devices and appliances
Not only does unplugging any unnecessary devices lower the chances of an electrical fire but also saves you energy.
