It’s an unfortunate reality that thousands of burglaries happen across the U.S. every year, and having your home broken into is a terrifying experience that no one should ever go through. While you can’t control if a burglar decides to target your home, there are a few simple ways to make it that much harder for them to be successful. By having a plan in place, you can make your home less likely to become a target and help prevent criminals from breaking in. So we’re bringing you five tips on how you can protect your home from a burglary.
Burglars are less likely to try and break into a home if they think there are people inside. Leaving a few lights on, having the TV volume up, even asking a neighbor to use your driveway can all help to prevent your home from seeming vacant. You can take it a step further and invest in timer-based lights that simulate the flicker of a TV screen or turn it on at night and off during the day.
Burglars won’t always go directly into your home, especially if they see valuables outside. Bikes, lawnmowers, grills, and other valuables can be tempting to a thief and may even encourage them to break in to steal even more valuables. You’ll want to keep these out of sight as much as possible by either locking them up in your garage or another type of storage unit.
It’s also best to avoid posting on social media while you’re away. You can always post vacation pictures after you’ve returned home. Failure to do so could mean broadcasting the fact that your home is unoccupied and could lead to burglary.
Now that you’ve locked away your outdoor valuables, it’s a good idea to invest in other outdoor measures. These can mean motion sensor lighting, having a neighbor or friend opt to mow your lawn to give the appearance the home is occupied, and having them even handle package deliveries while you’re away. Piled-up packages and mail are a dead giveaway that someone isn’t home and could raise the risk for a potential burglary.
As technology continues to advance, so does the ability to pick locks. Pushbutton locks are fairly easy for burglars to open, so you’ll want to invest in deadbolt locks and possibly door chains for the doors leading outside your home. You can also call a locksmith or hit up your nearest hardware store to upgrade the locks on your windows and slider doors too, as these can be some of the most vulnerable points of entry for a burglar.
If all else fails and a burglar manages to get through these defenses, an alarm can be a lifesaver. There are many alarm systems to choose from. These systems can be as minimal as simply blaring an alarm at the sign of a break-in; more advanced ones come equipped with recording cameras and immediately notify authorities to ensure your safety. Any burglar would find themselves in a real bind at the mere sound of an alarm and would most likely leave immediately. Alarm systems ensure your belongings remain safe and untouched.
